About the Founder

Master R.J. Shaw

     Master Shaw began studying Chinese GoJu Ryu in 1969 under Master Clayton in Ft. Smith Arkansas. In 1977, while stationed at Kunsan Air Base in Korea, Master Shaw began Studying Tang Soo Do under Master Lee Han Inn. In 1978, Master Shaw was promoted to Cho Dan. In 1980, still training under Master Lee Han Inn, Mr. Shaw was promoted to EE Dan. During the same year, Master Shaw began studying Shorin Ryu under Master Frank Hargrove in Hampton Virginia. Master Shaw earned his 2nd degree Black Belt in Shorin Ryu in 1983. In 1984 Master Shaw returned to Korea and was promoted to Sam Dan by Master Lee Han Inn. After this tour in Korea, Master Shaw was stationed in Austin Texas, where he opened a DoJang and began training with the World Tang Soo Do Association in Austin Texas. Master Shaw was promoted to 4th degree Black Belt in 1987 while still training with the World Tang Soo Do Association. 

     In 1991 Master Shaw was stationed at Pope Air Force Base where he met and began training with Sensei John Jackson. Soon after, Master Shaw began teaching a Tang Soo Do class on Base and continued to teach that class from early 1992 until his retirement in 1994. Upon his retirement, Master Shaw Founded the MTA Karate Academy in July 1994 and was the Chief Instructor at the Academy until his departure in late 1998. When Master Shaw left the Fayetteville area to began a new career with Gateway Computers in late 1998 he turned over the operation of the Academy to Mr. Garris, however, Master Shaw continues to closely monitor the Academy's activities and makes regular visits to provide continued training for Mr. Garris.
